All motorcyclists can enter the rally that takes place over the weekend of 5th and 6th July mounted on anything from an old flat tanker, a 50cc moped, a scooter and right through to the latest 1100cc long distance tourer – or three wheeler for that matter. The event, officially described as a scatter rally is jointly organised by the Auto Cycle Union and the British Motorcycling Federation. The up to 2000 riders are asked to visit some of 50+ controls dotted across the country from Harrogate to Winchester and from Ipswich to Worcester and aim to earn one of seven classes of awards Newcomers are advised to enter Saturday’s National Day time Rally, the Sunday morning Sunrise Rally or even a Bronze award. For extremely experienced riders the Platinum Award with up to 20 hours riding and special tests at the Motor Industry Research Association’s site near Nuneaton provides a real challenge. Many riders obtain sponsorship in aid of Mencap the mental health charity. Over £25,000 was raised at the most recent event. Whatever award riders aim for they’ll enjoy one of the great historic events of motorcycling and perhaps finish at Bletchley Park, where during the Second World War, dispatch riders and their bikes helped the geese that laid the golden eggs and never cackled, to defeat the enemy’s war machine and built the world’s very first practical electronic digital information processing machine – a forerunner of modern computers.
