It s difficult writing a page like this without it sounding stuffy and the last thing we want young bikers to think, coming into motorcycling for the first time, is that we are a bunch of old g### but that s the way things sound sometimes when you have to explain the technical side of life. Flying Start is one of the oldest continuously running training centres in the country. It was formed in 1947, not under its current name but as part of the Southampton and District Motorcycle Club to train people to ride bikes safely, not necessarily for a Test. For some of its early years it was run under the banner of the RAC/ACU. When this organisation closed its Training arm, the now correctly named Flying Start came under the umbrella of RoSPA, who later also closed down its motorcycle training. This was the opportunity for the training centre to become independent of outside influence and relate only to SDMCC.
In its current form, Flying Start is still committed to its original ideal of training for motorcycling safety. Staffed, as it is, entirely by volunteers who believe that biking should be fun, it only runs on Sundays, but in a friendly atmosphere. The instructors have much experience, and can train anyone from a novice teenager to a mature Restart rider in a helpful enthusiastic manner. The advantages of being associated with SDMCC are that our trainees are able to use the clubhouse facilities including refreshments and they are also able to take advantage of a years free
associate membership of the Club Flying Start has three CBT training areas, whose use has kindly been granted by Safetyclean; Courage Solent and Plastimo UK, where basic training can be given at a considerate pace to suit all individuals ending with a Certificate of Validation to let them use their Provisional Licence on the road. Basically, get your butts down here, grab a cup of coffee and find out how good riding a motorbike and enjoying our club can be!!
MOTORCYCLES FOR TRAINING
We have our own motorcycles and mopeds which are available for each of our training courses and for the Accompanied Test. If you wish to use one of our machines a fee, to cover the costs involved in running and maintenance, will be charged. You may of course use your own motorcycle if you have one, .
provided both you and the machine comply with all current (legislation covering riding a motorcycle. We also have crash helmets, gloves etc. which you may use, although it is obviously better to have your own. We use bike to bike radios for C.B.T and in preparation for the Accompanied Test
ALL RIDERS CATERED FOR
Our courses are run to cater for motorcycle, moped and scooter riders of all ages and abilities. Whether you have ridden before or not our friendly and knowledgeable instructors will be fully sympathetic and responsive to your needs and requirements. Their enthusiasm and expertise will help you to learn at whatever pace you feel comfortable with. This will make the whole process fun! And there is no extra charge, however long you take to learn.
COMPULSORY BASIC TRAINING
Flying Start are fully authorised by the Driving Standards Agency to carry out Compulsory Basic Training, which all riders need to complete before riding unaccompanied on the road. This also includes car drivers who were previously exempt. Our fully qualified instructors ensure
that you are taught everything necessary to successfully complete the syllabus. Please note there is no set time for completion of the C.B.T. course, and there is a great deal of information and practice involved. Training progresses according to the ability of each Individual, and therefore you should not expect to automatically receive your C.B.T Pass Certificate on your first training session. All C.B.T courses are conducted by D.S.A. Authorised Instructors.
ACCOMPANIED TEST PREPARATION
To take you up to and beyond the standard needed to pass the Accompanied Test. This includes off road manoeuvres, extensive on-road training as well as Highway Code & Road Safety practice, and theory preparation for both the Theory and Practical tests.
DIRECT ACCESS
If you are 21 or over and are a learner rider with a current CBT Certificate, Flying Start can aid you to learn on a larger motorcycle. You can take a Direct Access or Accelerated Access course with a qualified instructor - Talk to us for more information. We also offer a range of other courses tailored to your needs.
